OK, I give up: What are the names of the 28 Dioceses of ACNA?

On April 25th the Common Cause Partnership issued a press release titled, "Emerging Anglican Province Announces 28 Dioceses."The release tells us where the dioceses come from. It does not say what they are, or give their names.

It is now a month later. Some (but no many of us) continue to be interested in just what constitutes these dioceses. We know some of them: groups made up of bishops and people who left the diocese of Fort Worth, San Joaquin, Pittsburgh and Quincy, (that's 4), something called the Diocese of Western Anglicans (that's 5), some dioceses from the Reformed Episcopal Church, Anglican Mission in America, Convocation of Anglicans in North America, etc. But surely, given the meeting in April and the existence of some sort of a list out there somewhere there ought to by now be a posting on the Common Cause Partnership website of the 28. But then again maybe there are only, say 23, or is it 28, or ?

Time to ante up.

  1. Lessee, we got San Joaquin, Pittsburgh, Fort Worth, Quincy, uhm, the Diocese of Western Anglicans, North Anglia, Bob's Pretty Big Diocese, DiĆ³cesis de la Argentina Extremadamente Septentrional (Diocese of Extremely Northern Argentina), Diocese of the Presumptuous Assumption of the Blinding Light, Diocese of the Cootie-free Church, and, uh, the Diocese of the Great White North. How many is that? Not quite 28? Maybe they're still coming up with names; I remember how tough it was to come up with a name when I'd start a new band so I can just imagine what's involved with a brand, spankin' new diocese . . .

  2. Mark, did you mean to write ante up instead of anti up? Anti as some of us may be to the actions of ACNA, we still want to see them put their money on the table.

  4. FYI-this was in the newsletter for St Stephen's Anglican Church in Oak Harbor, WA.
"ACNA - THE ANGLICAN CHURCH IN NORTH AMERICA
This is about to become a reality, and we will be part of it in our new Diocese of Cascadia...On the Day of Pentecost there will be a special bulletin insert, telling of the more than 700 congregations
belonging to the ACNA, expressing deep gratitude to God for His grace and favor towards us, and explaining the need for a special Thank Offering - on a one-time basis - to help begin the work of supporting each parish and diocese." Whidbney Knitter

  5. How many bishops do those 28 dioceses have between them? A hundred?

Sometimes it seems that the so-called "orthodox" are determined to replace the priesthood of all believers with the episcopate of all believers.

  6. Actually, I am not sure the tally reaches up to 5.

Consider that Ft.Worth's holier than god crowd wont agree to be 'in communion' with Mr. Duncan because he ordains (homophobic) women. Last I heard the jury was out on REC being in anything and at the rate they are declining, they don't add all that many diocese. Ugandan and Kenyan holy people ordain women too, so they can't be in anything with Nigerian or Southern Cone holy people.

It is all so confusing when some humans set off to be really, really holy and some decide to be really, really, ultra-really holy.

I think the 28 diocese count came from the same people that did primate signature counts for ABp. Akinola. The are rather a bit bad with numbers. In Canada, as Fr. Troll and I have noted, they don't do income and cost accounting well either.

    Happy Birthday!

  9. Mark,

I think it's safe to name CANA's Anglican District of Virginia, which includes Truro, The Falls Church, their Northern Virginia plants, and a few others in the Commonwealth. I didn't dig very far into the CANA website - there are about 75 churches total but I didn't see a breakdown into districts.

The American Anglican Council lists a diocese of Dallas (plus two others in Quincy and Ft. Worth, but are the break-away dioceses already listed?) Quite possibly that's a net of one from the three.

So, there's two more for you, I think.

Mark, no doubt you have already reviewed the church lists on Acronymite web sites. I think most people would think there's a bit of consolidation needed for a realistic diocese count - and that's assuming none of the groups want to maintain their independent dioceses. And of course each list refers people looking for a church to those affiliated in partner groups. I see that as practical - not deceptive - but it does require someone to set up a spreadsheet to cull it all out and a little database would be better. I'm guessing that the ACNA organizers are doing just that. It wouldn't be that difficult an exercise until you headached your way through the task of verifying all the duplicates.

I know I'm not saying anything new to people who've been following all this. Newcomers to the story: you have some leads to sort it all out if you don't want to wait for ACNA to publish a list.

  11. Mark,
    Here:
The Anglican Church in North America unites some 700 Anglican parishes in 12 Anglican jurisdictions in North America into a single church. Jurisdictions coming together in the Anglican Church in North America are the Anglican Coalition in Canada, the dioceses of Fort Worth, Pittsburgh, Quincy and San Joaquin (of the Anglican Communion Network), the Anglican Mission in the Americas, the Anglican Network in Canada, the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, the Reformed Episcopal Church, and the missionary initiatives of Kenya, Uganda, and South America’s Southern Cone. Additionally, the American Anglican Council and Forward in Faith North America are founding organizations.
