Fr. Jake's slience is a witness

So, over at Fr. Jake's place, the home of Father Guido Sarducci in hiding, Fr. Jake has decided on Silence for Lent. He writes, "For personal, spiritual and vocational reasons, I need to step away for awhile. I may return after Easter. I can't promise that at this point, however, as I need to wait and see what the silence reveals."

What are we poor bloggers to do? Fr. Jake sometimes does indeed stop the world, allowing us to look more deeply at this or that feature of the passing events. He does so with humor and great care. He has worked hard keeping Jake's place alive. I check him daily for insight and am usually not disappointed.

He will be back. If not in the blogsphere, in the more important spheres of our lives. He is one of the best priests and all around fine human beings I know.

Silence is a witness every bit as much, if not more, than bloggers words.

So we listen for his silence, and we will hear it every day.

  2. "and may god have mercy on his soul" is right, madpriest - Mark, are you aware that when discussion and argument get heated at Jake's Place, we start posting recipes? Hope you're ready for it. Y'all come!

  3. Will Preludium become the methadone of Jake addicts going through withdrawl?

  4. The hole being left in the blogsphere by Fr. Jake is palpable.

His silence is a strong witness indeed.

And I do hope to see him among us again. (I could go see him this weekend, if I wanted. I'm close enough - but shy!)

  5. Oh, I don't know. If that's a current picture of our host, he has only one chin and thus can bear a few recipes.

  6. Dear Mark,

[I tried sending this to you via your poetmark private e-mail, but apparently you don't use that anymore...I'm a little embarassed to be putting this out on a public comments board--my apologies everyone--but I can't think of any other way to contact you!]

I admire your measured tone on your blog, Preludium. I am currently trying to develop my own skills as a blogger from a (self-avowedly) moderate viewpoint. For a sample of my take on the current crisis in the Episcopal Church, take a look at this post on my reactions to the most recent primates' communique:

I wonder if you would be willing to let me know what you think of my efforts so far and whether you have any pointers in how I could get a conversation going. I get a few dedicated readers every day, but very few comments. I'm beginning to think that I'm only appealing to the proverbial "silent majority" in the Episcopal Church!

I know your time is limited and you don't know me from Adam, but I just thought I'd toss this out, since I respect your opinion and am sure I could learn from your experience.

    Many thanks,

    MM
