Shameless Commerce Division: The Poetry Books

Readers of this blog may know, if they scroll down the left sidebar that I write poetry, some on a letter press, some on line, some in journals and some in separate book form. In the past month two books have made it into print:

Requiem for the Dictator: The Haiti Poems.

These are poems written over the course of ten years in response to the continuing dictatorships in Haiti. I have had a long time conviction that the only way out of the dismal state of affairs in Haiti is to bury the dictatorship known in the Duvaliers, father and son. In a sense it is their unholy ghost that continues to haunt the country. The poems were meant to parallel the elements of a requiem mass.

The shard fragments of experience, of little moments of insight, great moments of despair and love when least expected form the basis for these poems. In some ways I think my poetry is related to my theological mutterings the way the movie Time Bandits is related to the Faith. A friend once said about that movie, "I'm not sure Time Bandits is Christian, but it is very very Anglican."
