Amos 3:3 "Do two walk together unless they have made an appointment?" This is also translated, "Can two walk together unless they are agreed?" The realignment / GAFCON / "Mend the Net" folk have used this passage as a reason why the terrible North American churches - The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada - are beyond the pale. They cannot walk with us because they do not agree with us.Life is like that.
This week, of course we were all reminded of another walk, a walk where two people who were agreed in their incomprehension, were met by Another who used the occasion to open their minds and hearts in the breaking of bread and the breaking of the Word (that is Himself).
The difference between the two ways of thinking about the walk are astounding.
So I was delighted to also see another sort of common walk, in which some greater presence comes, and turns the music from being one performer doing his or her stick, to people of many different classes and cultures walking together. Playing for Change is a wonderful project. Check them out HERE. And maybe we need to be the Change we wish.
Give me this, O Lord, and not the walk only with those with whom I agree.

The abuse of that passage has been a hot button for me ever since the Windsor Fantasy began the misuse. Anyone who knows the "Authorized Version" is not the original should know that Amos was not telling us how to do doctrine.
ReplyDeleteBut, at this point, clearly we wont be making any appointments with the Gaf(fe)Con(men) and I guess we can simply move on to something like ministry. I think the HoB should elect some missionary bishops and look at Central Africa where based on the record, the Gospel really would be news.
