The Rev. Winnie Varghese, member of Executive Council, spoke at Council about the problems with meeting in Utah, her safety concerns and her hope that EC would live out in practice the resolution that all Episcopalians work for the full civil rights of gay and lesbian people. Her remarks and those of some others raised an important issue for Executive Council. Would we meet in a state whose stance concerning same sex couples and their rights were at odds with our expressed desire for full civil rights for gay and lesbian people? The question was not resolved in the Executive Council meeting, but the question was clearly presented, and Winnie spoke to it with clarity and honesty.
She has written about her concern on the Walking with Integrity blog. It is an extraordinary essay by an extraordinary person. Read it HERE.
At the close of her essay she writes, " There are always compromises when dealing with hotels and meetings arrangements. I'm happy to bear the weight of some of those compromises as others do, but they need to be stated aloud."
The generosity of her statement is amazing. My hope is that some resolution to the issue of meeting places can be found that does not compromise us as much as the Utah solution does.
