Who is on the Standing Commission on Unity Faith and Order?

Here is a list of those on the Anglican Communion Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order. Those highlighted in red would be reduced to consultant status (whatever that means) under the moratoria rule the Archbishop speaks of in his letter.

The Most Revd Bernard Ntahoturi, Primate of Burundi and Chair of Commission
The Rt Revd Dr Georges Titre Ande, Congo
The Ven. Professor Dapo Asaju, Nigeria
The Revd Canon Professor Paul Avis, England
The Rt Revd Philip D Baji, Tanzania
The Revd Canon Dr John Gibaut, World Council of Churches
The Rt Revd Howard Gregory, West Indies
The Revd Dr Katherine Grieb, Episcopal Church (USA)
The Revd Canon Clement Janda, Sudan
The Revd Sarah Rowland Jones, Southern Africa
The Revd Dr Edison Muhindo Kalengyo, Uganda
The Rt Revd Victoria Matthews, Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia
The Revd Canon Dr Charlotte Methuen, England
The Revd Dr Simon Oliver, Wales/England
The Rt Revd Professor Stephen Pickard, Australia
Dr Andrew Pierce, Ireland
The Revd Canon Dr Michael Nai Chiu Poon, South East Asia
The Revd Dr Jeremiah Guen Seok Yang, Korea
The Rt Revd Tito Zavala, Bishop of Chile, Southern Cone
The Revd Joanna Udal, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Secretary for Anglican Communion Affairs The Revd Canon Dr Alyson Barnett-Cowan, Director for Unity, Faith and Order
Mr Neil Vigers, of the Anglican Communion Office.

I am not sure of the status of SE Asia and Tanzania. I am sure this will be further corrected.

  1. Thanks for this excellent work, Mark. We've taken the liberty of linking it here.

  2. Only Rwanda could now be charged with 'border crossing' due to the formation of ACNA -- indeed, we may now be seeing its logic, in the light of RDW's letter. This is why the various Primates in Nigeria, Uganda, etc said they were relinguishing their erstwhile role and handing the affairs of ACNA to ACNA.
Otherwise your list is roughly accurate.

  3. Unless all the GS representatives are invited none of them will attend. Furthermore, the GS will not attend any meetings of any Anglican body if TEC and ACoCanada are invited even as consultants.

This was made very very clear in Singapore. This false "discipline" - hard on the Global South, light on the heretics - is dead before it began. So is the next primates meeting.

The only effective Anglican body now operating is the executive committee of the Global South. This include representatives of ACNA as a full member, and absolutely no representatives of the ABC.

  4. Or to state it more clearly: the status of ACNA bishops in other Provinces is something that can be worked through. TEC's embrace of SSBs and the consecrations of +LA and +NH cannot be dealt with in the same way. They are permanent, proud actions. They were not responsive to anything like the original border-crossings, but were done proactively.

  5. I think you'd want to include England on your list, if everyone were being honest. There are FAR MORE same-sex blessings in English parish churches than there are in the US.

    Peace,

  6. Fine. The ABC has politely made his request. Now TEC and ACofC should politely ignore it.

  7. Good work, Mark. As for Rwanda, I believe the history of AMiA pre-dates the other "border crossings", so I personally have no problems with them. We in TEC have lived in relatively peaceful coexistence with them for a decade now. May that continue with good will.

  8. Given the previous track record, only TEC and the ACoC would be asked to step down. We all know that. This is infuriating in the one hand and not worth the bother on the other.

  9. Your red assumes that all moratoria are equal, something that GS explicitly and ABC implicitly deny. So, of course, only the TEC rep (I didn't see one from ACoC) will be reduced to "consultant" status.
Perhaps the new PM in Blighty will get around soon to firing his predecessor's hire for not carrying out his assigned jobs and put in someone new either to do it or at least to stop pretending to be something he never was. Bye, bye Lord Rowan of Tonnapandy (I am never sure how to spell that particular fraud's name).

Cake, please - preferably while we burn the final draft of the Anglican Covenant.

  11. Scott's "gotcha" and Susan's "bingo" are quite beside the point. However many more same-sex blessings are taking place in the C of E, they remain anomalous (in the quite literal sense of that term). However fewer there may be happening in TEC, they are, as it were, "on the books," or at least soon will be as rites achieve official status. You may think TEC's approach is more transparent and therefore more honorable, but there you have it nonetheless. That may seem like a distinction without a difference, but it has enormous practical implications.

  12. Actually, Harry, he does say in the latter that, while folks may not see the issues of the moratoria as "morally equal," they are all equal in being divisive and in being the subject of the moratoria requests. So, one would think all those Mark highlighted would be subject.

More to the point, Scott points out, it should apply to the Church of England. I don't base this on the number of same sex blessings that happen, as these have not been "formally" approved, something of a shibboleth in the letter. However, the Church of England has formally approved a policy that allows clergy to enter into civil partnerships. Sure, there is the fig leaf of asking those participating to be celibate; but the formal policy exists nonetheless - and as I recall many on the Global South see that policy as no better than the Episcopal Church's.

  13. @James(Wellington): We know you're a Christian by your love.

...except the Holy Spirit! :-)(consistent w/ Scripture, Tradition and Reason).

  14. John Gibaut and Alyson Barnett-Cowan are both priests of the Anglican Church of Canada. Surely they would have to be reduced to "consultant" status as well.

  15. Malcolm,
According to Rowan's "formally" requirement, the ACoC would not be excluded.
While individual dioceses have taken steps to bless same-sex marriages, General Synod has observed the moratorium. And there is nothing on Synod's agenda that would suggest a change, simply more of the listening process, and no resolutions unless something comes from the floor. And the House of Bishops has likewise done nothing more than issue pastoral guidelines on the care of gays and lesbians. The HoB has refused to revisit the pastoral letter from the 70s which bars the ordination of non-celibate gays and lesbians (although a good many bishops no longer follow it).
So really, Canada has the same status as England.

  16. Alyson Barnett Cowan is a Canadian, so there is also the question of her status.

  17. The Statesonians of TEC and a few Canadians are all assuming that the ABC's request is also directed at the Canadians. At the same time, Jim Pratt is making the rounds of progressive blogs stating that he believes that Canada has not been as naughty as TEC and so is not included in the request.

It shall be interesting when the next real meeting of the affected committees/commissions is called.
