This video on the life of Jonathan Daniels is well worth the seeing. I came to ETS (The Episcopal Theological School) the year prior to the March from Selma to Montgomery. I remember the meetings in the community as people tried
to work out who would go to take part in the march. Jonathan and
Judith Upham stayed on. That summer (1965) I was in clinical pastoral training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and heard on the radio that Jonathan had been shot and killed. It seemed impossible, but there it was.
Jonathan's death changed us all, as did the rapidly expanding war in Viet Nam, as did so many other things in those days. There were other community meetings and other discussions of the terrible news of those days and other demonstrations and other occasions to pray and gather strength. It was a good time to be taught the Prophets and find strength in the Gospel. It is always a good time for such things.
