Ruth Gledhill on Bishop Elect Mary Glasspool

Ruth Gledhill, intrepid reporter for the London Times, has written a fine comment on her interview with Bishop Elect Mary Glasspool. She begins by saying,

"Canon Mary Glasspool graciously consented to speak to me yesterday. Some clerics, when you speak to them on the phone, are so holy it is impossible to get a news story out of them. Others are so political that it is equally impossible, but for opposite reasons. The best, like Canon Glasspool, syncretise wisdom and innocence, making them compelling to listen to and a joy to interview. In today's material world, it still takes my breath away to encounter men and women like this, reminding me of why I love this job."

Sometimes Ruth Gledhill says things so gracious that it takes my breath away as well.

Meanwhile she also wrote, "... the word from the US is that this election is likely to go through."

I believe she is right.

  1. Watching the short clip of Rev. Canon Glasspool from the Baltimore Sun site revealed a woman who sounds "real". And the Church needs more "real" people as leaders. So happy that seemed to have come across in her interview.

  2. You know what, I'm going to take a real risk here. I have absolutely no doubt that Mary's election will be confirmed. Besides being absolutely fabulous, she, like +Gene, is really quite conservative, theologically and politically. Neither she nor he make me happy in that fact, but I am absolutely over the moon about the election of the first lesbian priest to the episcopacy. That it's Mary? Well, 'how high the moon'?

  4. "Syncretise" is a wonderful word, and beautifully used here.

Not new to me though - a few years ago, *theological* "syncretism" was the damning-sin-du-jour, used to criticise liberals who, you know, mix Christianity with Buddhism, etc. Don't hear that much about it these days.
