Archbishop Orombi needs a better publicist.

The New Vision Website, a news site that claims to be "Uganda's Leading Website" posted a "clarification of yesterdays post on Archbishop Orombi's fear of homosexuals. The clarification is no improvement. The Pluralist, from whom (with permission ) I have snarfed up this drawing of the good Archbishop, speaks to the whole thing better than I can. You can read his remarks HERE. The Pluralist is more, let us say, straightforward in his language than we are used to here at Preludium, but his case is clear.

The Archbishop needs more than a clarification. He needs a publicist, one who can point out
that moving from the fear of homosexuals and their sympathizers to the fear of drug addicts who are homosexuals and could kill anybody and (gasp) are in the church, is no improvement AT ALL. The homophobia only gets more and more accentuated, all to what end? To support a campaign to rid the church of homosexuals. The Church of Uganda, it appears, does not welcome you first (whoever you are) and deal with you later. It deal first and welcomes later. What started out as an embarrassment is now just plain awful.

  2. As an accredited public relations practitioner in my secular life, I donèt care for the word "publicist." A publicist cares only about getting publicity, which Orombi has managed to do.

What Orombi needs (apart from some competent psychiatric help) is good public relations counsel.

Good PR folk know better than to lie. Lying is wrong, of course. But even more importantly, lying doesn't work.

If he had good PR counsel, heèd stop lying.
